Valentine's
Dinner Theatre
Production Dates
Elk's Hall, Vanderhoof, BC
For the first time in its brief history, the Vanderhoof Community Theatre hosted a "Dinner Theatre." We worked with local business woman, Kathy Derksen, who provided the meal. Also for the first time we did "theatre in the round."
Two one-act plays were performed, "Awkward Silence" by Jay Reiss, and "Pizza: A Love Story" by Julianne Bernstein.
"Awkward
Silence" (1m, 1f, 1m/f) is an actor's play... but hilarious
for the audience, too. A couple meet in a restaurant on a blind date.
Instead of speaking to each other, however, the script calls for them
to tell the story of what is happening to them at that moment, their thoughts,
fears, hopes, frustrations. While each tells the story, however, the actors
have to act out the story, becoming both story narrators and participants.
Clever, quick dialogue is a result, with just enough "awkward silence"
to make this blind date seem like the real thing! This is a short, one-act
play which was performed between the main course and the dessert.
"Pizza: A Love Story" (3m, 2f) is the one-act story of a jittery young woman who realizes her beau is going to pop the question tonight. The thought terrifies her, even though she loves him. She calls her sister for help... and 911... and the local pizza joint... anything and anyone to distract her boyfriend from proposing. Of course, all arrive in due time, each one adding to the confusion the previous one has brought. Appropriately for a Valentine's Dinner, it all ends in a lingering kiss... and the smell of fresh pizza.
Both "Awkward Silence" and "Pizza: A Love Story" are available through Samuel French Inc.
