The following chart illustrates the distribution of the various cattle types that make up the cattle industry in the Nechako Valley.
The Vanderhoof Auction yard provides a ready market for many cattle producers in the central interior. It holds yearling and regular livestock sales in the spring and fall seasons, along with hosting special sales such as the registered bull sale, horse and tack sales and machinery sales in early spring. The Vanderhoof auction has sold an average of 20,067 cattle per year over the past 3 years (1996,1997, 1998). The gross sales in 1998 totaled $12,700,000.00. The Vanderhoof Auction also provides access to the satellite sales networks. Livestock: There are increasing numbers of exotics such as buffalo, fallow deer, llama and goats, rheas and ostriches that have captured a market in breeding pairs and specialized value added products. The following have been reported:
Poultry: 81 farms reported 3,492 total hens and chickens consisting of 1,306 broilers and roasters, 547 pullets and 1,639 laying hens. 19 farms reported 349 turkeys. |
