Garden planting day!
Respondents of the NVRCA Farm Survey overwhelmingly reported May 24, Victoria Day as the special day for garden planting!


Fast Facts:
Greenhouse production has been steadily increasing in the Nechako Valley. As of May 1996 12 farms reported 56,648 square feet of flowers and vegetable growing under glass or other protection.

 


Field Crops

These include wheat, oats, and barley and tame hay forage crops.

Grains: A total of 18,952 acres were reported for grains with barley being predominant.

Crop Distribution Chart

Forage: The forage crops grown totaled 60,432 acres with 35,741 in Alfalfa and 24,691 in all other tame hay.

Vegetables, Tree Fruits & Berries

Vegetables: Vegetables were reported in small acreages or as gardens. The following vegetables were listed as being grown in the Nechako in a variety of total acreages from small garden plots, up to a total of 8 acres for any one variety. A total of 13 farms reported 24 acres of vegetables in 1996.

Vegetable production is markedly on the rise. More farms are looking to vegetables as a viable cash crop. Since 1991 the number of acres reported to be in vegetable production has grown from 3 to 24 acres.

Tree Fruits & Berries: Two farms reported growing apples, pears, plums, prunes and sweet cherries, and one farm reported growing peaches. Six farms reported a total of 15 acres of Strawberries, Raspberries and or Blueberries.
