The Nechako Agriculture region is located at the
geographic centre of the Province of British
Columbia. It lies within the fertile Nechako
Valley encompassing 8.5 million acres (34,619 sq.
km) within subdivision "A" in the Bulkley-Nechako
Regional District. The agricultural sector according
to Statistics Canada Census 1996 covers 295,554
acres deeded, rented or under lease, which
represents approximately 3.5% of the total land
area of the 8.5 million acres in subdivision
"A". Additionally there were 600,000
acres under range tenure in 1997 for 15,800
animal units grazing on crown range within the
total area of the Nechako region.Tourism is a growth
industry for the area due to the central location
on the Cassiar route to Alaska, the Prince Rupert
ferry traffic and excellent wilderness adventure
country surrounding the Nechako Valley. A list of
these attractions may be obtained from the Vanderhoof Chamber of
Commerce.

The Nechako
region is inter-connected with all weather paved roads to
the larger municipalities within the region. Rural areas
are well served with a network of paved and gravel roads.
The Nechako region is linked on the East to the
municipality of Prince George with a population of nearly 100,000 within
it's regional district. Prince George serves as a main
service and supply centre to the Nechako region. It also
provides many regional government and health care
services as well as post secondary education centres
through its University of Northern British
Columbia and the College
of New Caledonia.
To the West of the Nechako
Region lies the Pacific seaport of Prince Rupert, with a
population base of over 24,000 in its regional district. Prince Rupert is an excellent international port
facility. It is a major shipping centre for timber, coal
and grain. It offers potential for additional agriculture
export as forage and grain production expands in the
Nechako.
The population base
(approx. 35,630) in communities that lie along the route
to Prince Rupert from the Nechako region provides a
comparatively untapped market for Nechako agriculture
value added products.
