I am wondering what it is in a person's brain that makes them crave drugs at all? I'm what I call a "highaholic"--that is I'm not addicted to any particular substance, but I find that I'm always wanting to "use" something.. it can be alcohol, pot, coke, meth, acid, shroom, ecstacy.. whatever, but I seem to always have to be ingesting SOMEthing. If I have pot, I feel n need to do anything else, and the amount of pot I'd smoke is relatively small and does not inhibit by cognitive abilitities or my motor co-ordination in any measurable or perceptible way. In fact, pot actually speeds me up while claming me down (wierd)!. All I know is whenever I'm "sober". I want to ingest a non-food substance. Why is that?
I doink like to get drunk or totally "out there", but I'm never satsified or comfortable being totally sober. When I was pregnant my body knew it before I did..for the first time in many years I suddenly found I "could not" (literally) drink alcohol, not even a minute! amount. My body was revulsed. it was about amonth later I learned I was pregnant. Throughout the pregnancy I had no desire to drink, although my body had no problem if I'd smoke a little pot from time to tme. what in the brain might have affected my pregnancy-related hormones in a way that caused a chrnoic "highaholic" not to crave getting high anymore. If only we could find out..we could synthesize it, bottle it, and cure alcoholism. Any thoughts? About both thei "highaholic: issue and the ptential for a cure for alcoholism.

First of all we are just on the edge of learning what might be going on in some individuals' brains' that cause them to have a real need to feel different. There are a variety of theories that allow us to predict who these folks might be based on their family history, their genetics, and the mental health history.. using a biopsychosocial model of assessment we can sometimes make sense of what it is that is going on for some people and their use of mood altering substances. Because you seem to be a person who is quite aware of her body and what is happening with the examplethe pregnancy.. as you know female hormones of several types are elevated during pregnancy, these hormones also often improve ones sense of well being... this could be part of the reason that your pregnacy was protected from the misuse of alcohol. What a gift.

The reasons why people use alcohol and other drugs are many faceted and varied, each individual person has their own story and their body has a fairly individual reaction to it. It is a most facinating subject and I could talk about it and write it about till one was old and grey. There is much research going on looking for medication that will help people through the craving stages that often push people back into using substances such as cocaine, crystal meth, alcohol, nicotine, heroin, etc. but there certainly is not a silver bullet. We are scratching the surface of what is going on it the brain and how the brain function and body systems are inter-dependent and inter-related. We can help people cure themselves of the drug dependencies and it takes a highly motivated and courageous person working with someone he/she trusts, using support systems and medical expertise to encourage and support them through the hard parts.

Stopping doing drugs after doing them for awhile is not just about having the "will pwer" to quit. Biological changes have occurred in a person';s brain and there are biological reasons for cravings etc. It sounds like your fiance is on a lot of other drugs besides doing the "occasional line of powder".. his body chemistry is changed and out of balance. I would suggest to "come clean" with his doctos, get clear with himself about what it is he wants to do.. do drugs or not, and then work withsomeone to find a wah for him to get clean and stay clean as well as dealing with what sounds to be a chronic pain condition.

The major changes that you will be dealing with is your brain chemistry which has been seriously altered which can cause you to be suffering some depression and anxiety as well as other fairly miserable withdrawal symptoms that can send people back to using cocaine. Most people stopping cocaine need some help in the way of information, counselling, encouragement and a structured lifestyle. Often folks feel like life is boring, and fairly dull and this is due to the changes in your brain chenmistry. : Good for you wanting to quit meth.. its a bad drug and hard to quit so if you find yourself craving and having a tough time staying clean find somebody (a non-drug user) to help you out. In general it takes up to 5 days for your system to clear out all of the breakdown products of methamphetamines. If you have been using on a regular basis for several months or a year or more I would suggest that you give yourself longer just to be on the safe side. I have just been prescribed anti-anxiety medication and I am an occasional coke user, I know it is bad for me but are there any serious reactions to taking both at the same time?
The anxiety you are experiencing is most likely caused by the coke use. Anxiety/panic attacks is a common consequence of both alcohol and cocaine use. People sometimes use their drug of choice (in your case coke) to deal with the anxiety, it does't work very well but while high on coke one doesn't care if they are anxious and very shortly they go from being an occasional user to a dependent user. The other thing that is important to know is that if you use your medication at the same time as using coke, one may cancel the other out, no coke high, and continued anxiety and a panic attack that will last longer because of mixing the medication. One can never say that there will not be serious consequences when doing drugs and taking medication. It is a bad idea.

I just took a drug test fora job and it came back negative. They would not allow me to put my prescriptions on a form or tell them. I am prescribed and take Oxycontin 10mgsx3/day, 10mgms Percocent/PRN (3xday), Adderral 30 mgms/day, Xanax/1mgm/day. I have taken pain meds for 4 years or so pretty constant due to back pain, which I am finally having surgery to correct (and get off the pain meds), Xanax for 4 years and adderal for around a year or so.. I am almost postiive they didn't test for benzos but could you tell me what my test likely showed up as positive for b/c they wouldln't tell me on the phone and I can't get alhold of them.. I am sure amphetamines showed up due to that is what adderal is, but can they tell the difference in that and meth? It was a urine test?
You are on a lot of medication for your pain and as you likely are aware the Percacet and the Oxycontin are opiods, i.e. heroin-like drugs and therefore your urine test would be positive for opiods. And you are right the Adderal is an amphetamine and would therefore show breakdown products of amphetamines in your urine which are similiar to the breakdown products of methamphetamine.
We are not drug testing experts at this sight so really cannot say whether or not the laboratory can tell the difference between meth(crystal) and adderal. I would suspect that it depends on the level of the testing material.
I encourage you to get lots of information about the Percacent and Oxcontin that you are on prior to you having your surgery. These drugs are addictive and often are difficult to stop even though the reason for your pain has been repaired. Often folks need extra support and encouragement to stop using these drugs because of their high incidence for dependency. Good luck with the surgery.

: Good for you for "fixing" to stop using meth. As a rule it takes up to 5 days for the breakdown products to be out of your system so that the drug tests will most likely be negative. I strongly encourage you to connect with a counselling service or someone in your community to encourage and assist you with the withdrawal symptoms and the cravings that will o ccur that can push people back into using in spite of their very strong will power and determination to stop using this drug. Crystal meth is very nasty crap! It is a horrible drug that is very difficult to stop using once you have got into the habit of using on a regular basis. Hi curious. Good question. Most pills are water soluble including lortabs. Absorption times into and out of the human system is different for different medications. Drinking a gallon or two of water does not remove the medication from the system faster. Water is healthy for the overall workings of the entire body systems including the liver and no doubt helps the liver work more efficiently but not faster. Drugs are broken down and filtered out of the system by the liver and this takes a specific period of time, there is no method of speeding up the process that I know of. my friend has been using cocaine every weekend for the past two months. She will do a gram a the most in one night and that is it. Then she won't use again until the following weekend. she has decided to quit and is starting a new job, how long before it will break down and not be detectable in her system.
I am glad your friend is thinking about quitting ocaine.. it is a very addictive drug and often is difficult for people to quit even if they are only using a gram once a week. If she finds that she doesn't quit as quickly as she plans I encourage you to encourage her to talk to an addictions worker so that she gets a good understanding of what to expect and how it works. Good for you and good for your sister in the decision to "kick the stuff". The metabolites or break down products of cocaine can be found in urine for between 2-7 days after the last use and likely the same can be said for the baby. There is not a lot of research done on newborns and their mothers who have used cocaine. In general women who abuse cocaine often use other substances such as alcohol or tobacco so it is very dfficult to say that cocaine use is responsible for a specific problem a child may have. On the other hand it is well known that women who have used cocaine and are pregnant are considered to be high risk pregnancies and it is important that your sister let her doctor know that she has been using off and on throughout the pregnancy so that it will be expected that she and the baby may need special care at delivery. As you probably already know the difficulty that your sister probably faces are fairly intense cravings after being cocaine free for several days and it is these cravings that send her back using. When someone snorts an amphetamine, what kinds of symptoms do they display?
Amphetamines are a stimulant and they have speeding up effect on the body. Hence the name "speed" is used in association with amphetamines. Increased blood pressure, heart rate, body temperature (excessive sweating) lack of need to sleep, lack of need to eat, the individual may be very edgy, they can become aggressive, and paranoid, sometimes having hallucinations or delusions. This all depends on how much they are using and how long they have been using.

I made a mistake of doing about a 10th of a gram of methamphetamines 38 hours before I have to take a UA. I am on a color code so they random UA's I have been doing so well and I am getting better and better at controlling my impulsive behaviours. I am so scared not, my colour got call and I hadn't used the drug for of over 2 or 3 months ( on occasion) an d then did about 3 small lines on Saturday starting early in the afternoon and did the last one at 1 am, then went to bed. I think that you would have failed the test after 36 hours… it is cutting it too close even with a fast metabolism… However I am not all knowing and all seeing…. And on occasion have been off on my information. I hope that even typing things out helped you with your issues. Having some one OD would be a terrible experience and part of dealing with it is to ask all kinds of questions. What antidepressants that would show up as street drugs, well I am not sure. The modern SSRI, probably would not. An older drug possibly or maybe there is another explanation? Was your cousin mixing here medication with other things? These are tough questions, hard to figure out in such a stressful time. If it is really important for you to know the answer, ask if you can talk with her doctor, or the individual that did the blood screening. There are so many things to respond to I am not sure where to start. Remember if you have stopped using meth, it should be out of your system in 48 hours or so. If you are in Canada I don't think that the doctors will test your urine for anything unless mandated to. Do you want the doctors to test for it?? Or are you worried they will. I don't know the law in the states so I am not sure if they automatically screen for drugs. Know as for doing it right…. Find out what works for you!!!! Talking to a counsellor to find out why you started using, and what kept you coming back. Where you are searching out support? There are lots of places on the net and in your community that can help. Hi a friend has a UA on Tuesday 31 and had a few hits on meth at about midnight friday the 27th. He used to be a everyday user until about amonth ago and is trying to quit but got ahold of some old friends. Hi, I just barely got out of jail on Tuesday 24th after 3 months from a charge for methamphetamines. I came home and my boyfreiend and his friend were smoking meth upstairs while I was downstairs. After awhile I started getting buzze. I didn't even go upstairs! It is now thrusday am and I have to go and five a UA to my PO. I know I caught a contact high from it because I haven't been able to sleep since I got home. Is it possible to give a dirty UA after a contact high such as this? The mind body connection is a very amazing thing. People can decrease their blood sugars with meditation and visualization techniques but I really think that the chances of having a dirty urine test after "catching" a contact high to methamphetamines is highly unlikely to almost impossible. I really hope that you are working with someone to deal with your meth use as it sounds like you are living in a difficult situation to stay clean. : First of all I want to congratulate your friend on deciding to stop smoking pot. That is one of the first best gifts she can give to her baby. Good for her and good for you for supporting her in this first wonderful decision. Second of all, the baby will not likely test positive for THC at birth. The effects ofmarijuana on the unborn child are difficult to measurell, however it seems like women who use pot during pregnancy, like those who smoke tobacco are at increased risk for having small bacies. Also they are at risk for premature labour. As long as she is able to stay quit the effects of her using up until the 28 th week will be much less than if she had continued to smoke. : Depends on how much alcon\hol you were drinking over what period of time. In general your blood tests would be negative after 24 hours. There is nothing that will speed the process, it takes times. Added water and fruit juices help the body work more efficiently but does nothing to speed up breaking down the alcohol and getting it out of your system.

Hi, I took a drug test yesterday, Tuesday the 3rd, Friday the 29th I did 3 loratabs and Sunday I did 3 and a half a xanax bars and on Monday I did two loratabs. I hadn’t used in about two weeks. I have random UA test by color code and I made a couple of mistakes by turning to old habits. I did meth for about 3-4 days using about 1/20th a gram each day. Then I got clean for 2 days and a friend gave me 1/10th of meth and I did it. I also took a 20 mg oxycontin yesterday for my scoliotsis in my back, but I am not prescribed it. It sounds like you are trying to start a clean life…. So it has been at least a week since you wrote in and you should be clean now. Did you make it? What are you doing with your life and money now? Have you talked to a doctor about the pain in your back? You have legitimate stress in your life (we all do) and you have the right to reach out to people who can support you without offering you drugs…There are people out there.. just look in different places. You are asking me a question that I cannot answer… I can not guarantee you anything, as I do not know what your occasionally is … 3 times a week… then the marijuana is going to take six weeks. If it is once a week, then you may be clean in 3-5days.

I really want to express my admiration about how you are educatiing yourself regarding ritalin. Tough questions, and as someone who also has a child who has been diagnosed with add, I truly can understand how gut wrenching your questions are. Will he be on ritalin for life? Well, this is unique to each child, some children seem to outgrow, or learn how to deal with their adhd.
On the other hand there are many adults suffering with adhd. Is ritalin habit forming? I have looked at some research witch says that taken as directed that ritalin is not habit forming, The danger is when it is taken in access if the prescribtion. YOU ARE RIGHT!!!!! Both MScontin and oxycodone are made from the opiate family ( ie Morphine and heroine). They both will show up as opiates in the body. Opiates usually are detectable in urine for 1 or 2 days after you have taken it. Since you are taking them daily I would say that yes they will show up in your urine. I think it is great that you are taking control of this situation and will be able to educate the Doctor. There is a book that describes a number of drugs, legal and illegal, called BUZZED The Straight Facts About the Most Used and Abused Drugs from Alcholol to Ecstacy. It is written by a number of Phds out of the Duke University Medical Center. In the chapter about opiates it talks about oxcyodone and Morphine which Morphine Sulfate ie MScotin is. I am add/adhd and have a prescription for Ritalin. I have read that it will show up as an amphetamine in a urine drug test. Will they fail me if I have the prescription and tell the nurse before the test? I don’t want my company to know about my add/ adhd, due to negative stereotypes. Any advice?
Ritalin is an amphetamine drug, it will show up as amphetamine. I have no idea about the rules around passing and failing due to prescribed amphetamines. Maybe you could contact the local testing site anonymously to ask about their policies regarding prescriptions. Tough spot, you may be stereotyped any way if your drug test comes back dirty. Add/ adhd is not well understood and just now we are realizing many individuals at any age struggle with it. I am going to start at your last question first: the clues as to how pur your "cut".. there really aren't any, this drug is manufactured in all kinds of places by all kinds of people. Your best best is to be VERY SURE of where your drug is coming from as is is laced with all kinds of toxic substances like drano. You have no idea of the amount of the active ingredient from sample to sample. So USER BEWARE. For a "successful" experience be sure that you are with real friends, people who do care about what happens to you and will make sure that you are safe. If you are at a rave or some such social event be sure there is plenty of water available. DO NOT think that if one hit is good 2 or 3 will be fantastic. Overdose is very easy with this family of drugs. And don't be fooled this is a dangerous substance and a dangerous "trip" you are contemplating. Overheating is a real danger so tell your friends to make sure that you take breaks from dancing, etc, and get lots of water. Don't stay up for days doing E.

Wow, I really want to applaud your decision to quit while you are pregnant and then to stay off. You are right smoking marijuana while pregnant has a lot of effects on your baby. Inhaling smoke causes your blood vessels to constrict, which cuts down on the amount of oxygen that is being delivered to your foetus. This can result in low birth weight and/or premature birth among other things. The more you avoid pot the healthier your baby will be. Quitting can be a struggle for many people, and I want to stress that you have a right to get support for this decision.
